Cold Sores - What are they and what causes them?

Cold sores are a symptom of the Herpes Simplex virus. The virus itself is incurable and will remain with the sufferer for the rest of their life, though it may remain “dormant” for extended periods of time. The sores caused by Herpes typically appear around the mouth or genitals, depending on the type of infection. Additionally, Herpes may cause some side effects such as heart problems and immune system issues.

Cold sores cannot be prevented entirely; however certain steps can be taken in order to reduce the frequency and duration of their appearance. Let's examine some of the best ways to help get rid of cold sores.

For example, it is recommended that you avoid salty and acidic foods as these can irritate the skin around your mouth, leading to outbreaks. Additionally, many people recommend applying petroleum jelly-based products to cold sores when they do appear in order to protect them and reduce their healing time.

If you can, try to reduce stress levels as much as possible as this is another major contributor to cold sore outbreaks. Obviously this can be easier said than done, but there are many techniques available to help relieve stress and improve your overall mood.

If you do suffer from Herpes, it is important to try to limit direct contact with others, especially during an outbreak. This virus is extremely contagious, so try to avoid kissing or touching others and do not share drinks or anything that your skin comes into direct contact with.

Additionally, avoid touching your cold sores at all costs as this can aggravate them and can spread the infection from one area to another (i.e. from your mouth to your genitals). Making direct contact with your eyes after touching cold sores can also cause permanent vision damage and so should be avoided.

It is a good idea to consult your physician or health care provider for information, advice and treatment options. He or she may recommend new or popular medications, ointments or other treatment methods that can help control the virus and minimize cold sore outbreaks.

As a final word of advice, try not to let cold sores control your life. It is obviously an unpleasant situation to deal with, but with treatment and the right attitude, you can still very much live a happy life.
